Extreme heat, hail, heavy rains, and high winds are all common experiences for people living in the Lone Star state. For that reason, the use of metal as a roofing material is gaining popularity both at the residential and commercial levels. To take full advantage of this positive trend, manufactures of metal roofing materials are now offering a wider range of styles and colors to appeal to a broader cross-section of Texas residents.

A metal roof provides Texas residents with excellent protection against hail, heavy rain, and high wind. A metal roof weighs approximately one-third as much as a roof composed of traditional asphalt shingles, thereby reducing the weight-induced stress on the overall building structure. In addition, the Energy Tax-Credit law provides a credit for the use of heat-reflective metal roofing.

One downside to the selection of a metal roof is cost. In most cases a metal roof will cost a homeowner 2 or 3 times more than a traditional asphalt roof. Some of that cost would be recouped via reduction in home energy costs, durability, and redemption of any applicable tax credits.

It is unlikely that metal will replace asphalt as the material-of-choice for Texas residents at any time in the near future. However, it will likely continue to gain incremental market share for those willing to pay a premium to secure the advantages that a metal roof provides.
